London incendiaries The Heat Inc. – long a favoured band here at SonicAbuse (check out our review of their last full-length effort) – return with a brand new single “True Romance”. SA blistering, dive bar anthem, it tears down the darkened backroads of rock’n’roll with greased abandon.
Keenly attuned to where rock music is heading next, The Heat Inc. have distilled their signature blend of brutality and beauty into a track that could knock out a 200 lb truck driver. “True Romance” is loud, melodic, dangerous and utterly unabashed — a tsunami of sound that cements the band’s reputation as one of the most electrifying acts emerging from the UK scene.
Sweltering and seductive, the savage “True Romance” began taking shape shortly after the band wrapped work on their first album. Vocalist Jon Dodd found himself experimenting with loose ends on bass in his home studio, initially jamming around the feel of an earlier riff before searching for something more melodic to drive the song forward.

“I was at home in the studio just playing around on bass with this very easy rider, David Lynch kinda riff,” he explains. “I wanted a chorus that really opened up it up melodically, so I started throwing a few different progressions out while jamming with a friend on drums and mouthing random vowel sounds over the top into this busted mic.”
Inspiration struck from an unlikely source.
“A friend had recently introduced me to Tarantino’s True Romance and I’d totally fallen in love with it,” says Dodd. “I had a canvas of the film poster hanging in the studio and I remember just staring right at it while we looped the chorus — and suddenly the whole thing was just there.”
Bassist Nico Rigot later refined the verse riff, subtly shifting the emphasis of the notes to give the track its own, slightly clipped identity. The result is a song that saunters effortlessly between seedy, swaggering verses and a soaring, vitriolic beast of a chorus.
Over the past few years The Heat Inc. have built a reputation for high-energy live shows and uncompromising songwriting, steadily attracting a loyal and growing following. With their roots in the spirit of classic rock’n’roll but a sound firmly grounded in the present, the band continue to carve out their own path.
With “True Romance,” The Heat Inc. open the door to what comes next — louder, sharper and more ambitious than ever.
