Loosegroove Records recording artists, Seattle-based band, BRAD, released their final LP, In The Moment That You’re Born this Friday. The album comes hot on the heels of a NYC celebration of Loosegroove at St. Vitus in Brooklyn. Stone took the stage with Loosegroove artists, Jonny Polonsky and Jamie Hall of Tigercub and did a searing version of the Black Sabbath classic, Paranoia among other musical highlights.
In The Moment That You’re Born is the band’s first new album in over a decade. Comprised of guitarist Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam, Painted Shield), drummer Regan Hagar (Satchel, Malfunkshun), Bassist Keith Lowe, and late singer Shawn Smith, BRAD created an incredible and musically varied 10-track record that ranges from fast paced rock-n-roll to emotional down-tempo ballads. The heavier songs like the two singles “Hey Now What’s The Problem?”and title track “In The Moment That You’re Born” are juxtaposed by the lighter tracks like “Take Me Back Home” and “Simple Subtraction.” Each song on the album showcases the band’s masterful musicianship, and singer Shawn Smith’s powerful and captivating vocals.
Stone says, “Shawn’s lyric from years ago about it never fails. ‘You always return to the scene of the crime.’ Well, BRAD has always been good at looking back and returning as well. Cherishing those times in the past, where we allowed ourselves to experience the magic of creation together, with all the sense of adventure, fear and fearlessness, insecurity and bravado.”
The band self-produced In The Moment That You’re Born with all vocals being recorded by Shawn Smith in recording sessions prior to his 2019 passing. In addition to the original songs on the album, BRAD recorded a new version of “Stars N’ You”; written by the late Seattle musician Andrew Wood (Mother Love Bone, Malfunkshun). The song was originally recorded for the 1986 “Deep Six” compilation by Malfunkshun, and also featured BRAD drummer/Loosegroove co-founder Regan Hagar.
Stone continues, “In the spirit of looking back, we always loved the old ‘rough mix’ that we spent no time on, versus our labored over ‘pro mix.’ Our most beautiful songs are the ones we shared with each other the most, and inspirations came in an instant. It’s easy to look back and see this wisdom in action. It’s harder to recognize in the moment… In The Moment That You’re Born. Regan, Keith, and I finished these tracks without our spiritual leader and our singer. We had a special experience, hearing these songs fresh after all that time, tweaking, adding, discovering hidden gems… all the while thinking of what Shawn would like, how he would make this great, how he would make this great, how he would make us laugh, or totally change the direction of a song in an amazing way.”
In The Moment That You’re Born was recorded and mixed by Floyd Reitsma at Studio Litho in Seattle (except for the title track, which was mixed by Josh Evans).
The artwork was created by Hagar and includes photos taken by famed Seattle photographer Lance Mercer.
Anticipation for the new album was high with critics like SPIN, Consequence, Revolver, and more lauding BRAD’s new music.
Along with the new album release, BRAD are also celebrating the 30-year anniversary of their acclaimed debut album Shame, released on April 27, 1993 on Epic Records. Shamefeatured original music that stood as a counterpoint to the music that was coming out of Seattle during that time featuring Shawn Smith’s haunting vocal ability intertwined with the musicianship of the band.
To further mark the anniversary of that landmark LP, BRAD has released limited-edition vinyl reissues of the album. The vinyl is available in various packaging configurations and can be purchased here LINK
