With their appearance at Bloodstock Open Air, the UK’s premiere all metal festival, less than four weeks away, Leicester’s Final Coil have released the latest instalment in their ‘Countdown To Bloodstock‘ series of videos. Following on from ‘Scattered Dust‘ and ‘The Growing Shadows‘ the band now present the fierce, dark, disturbed and disturbing ‘Wires‘, captured in all its live venom at The Black Heart in London.
Reflecting on ‘Wires’, which is taken from Final Coil’s acclaimed third album – The World We Inherited – frontman Phil Stiles says:
“Wires was, I think, the beginning of it all. Certainly, it was the first song to be directly inspired by the interview with Jazz Coleman, which covered everything from “full spectrum dominance” to Moregellons Disease, and which eventually led to the concept behind the album as a whole. It was Morgellons which inspired this song. The condition (medically unsubstantiated) can take a variety of forms, but the one I remember most is an extreme variant where the sufferer believes themselves to be impregnated with nano-technology and can even, in some cases, come to believe that they can see the symbols of major companies embedded into their skin. As with all such conditions, the fact that it is poorly understood leaves questions open about its substance, but regardless of its legitimacy, it’s enough for me that there are those who believe its existence and, to that extent, suffer with it.”
“The song, then, comes from a place of empathy and it’s intentionally one of the heaviest songs on the album, because it is an attempt to convey the creeping horror of believing yourself to be the victim of a parasitic organism. I had, originally, intended to expand the lyrics, but having recorded the demo, it occurred to me that the repetitive nature of the lyrics are perfect – both for a condition that leaves its sufferers feeling frantic; and for something that is highly likely to be more conspiracy than genuine. With most conspiracy theories coming from a place of belief rather than fact, the arguments put forward tend to be similarly repetitive and so, the lyrics stayed as they were. This recording documents the first time we ever played this song live and I think we captured its brutal pulse pretty well.”
