Acclaimed composer and musician Jaz Coleman has embarked on the creation of a groundbreaking choral work based on Liber AL vel Legis (The Book of the Law), the mystical text received via transmission by Aleister Crowley in 1904 during his time in Cairo. This text laid the foundation for Thelema, Crowley’s spiritual philosophy, and remains one of the most influential works in Western esotericism. This ambitious project will bring Crowley’s radical vision into new artistic form.
Jaz Coleman is an artist well known for blending genres and pushing the boundaries of music. As a found- er, frontman and only remaining continuous member of the influential band Killing Joke, Coleman helped shape the sound of post-punk, industrial, and alternative rock. Since their inception in 1978, the band has influenced countless artists, from Nirvana and Metallica to Nine Inch Nails and Foo Fighters. Known for their uncompromising sound, politically charged lyrics, and atmospheric intensity, Killing Joke remains one of the most enduring and innovative bands of the genre.
Beyond his work in rock, Coleman has an extensive classical background, blending rock, classical, and avant-garde music in ways few others can. His classical compositions, including orchestral works inspired by Pink Floyd, The Doors, and Led Zeppelin, have earned him acclaim across musical genres, solidifying his status as one of the few musicians capable of bridging these worlds.

“Few have influenced the post-war bubble of counterculture quite like Crowley. Regardless of one’s opinion of this controversial character, he is ranked among the top 100 most influential individuals of the United Kingdom. And as everyone knows, his face graces the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beatles’ most iconic masterpiece. It is therefore a great honour to compose Liber AL as a ritual- istic choral work, to commemorate his great magnum opus. It is the commission of my life!”
— Dr. Jaz Coleman
Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), once labelled “The Wickedest Man in the World,” was a British occultist whose unconventional lifestyle and radical ideas left a lasting influence on modern spirituality. As the founder of Thelema, his most famous work, Liber AL vel Legis (The Book of the Law), challenged tradition- al religious views and advocated for self-realisation, personal freedom, and the pursuit of one’s True Will. Though controversial in his time, his revolutionary ideas continue to inspire those exploring alternative spiritual paths today.
Jaz Coleman’s choral work will merge classical and modern elements to reflect the complexity of Liber AL vel Legis (The Book of the Law) and Crowley’s enigmatic philosophy. With the premiere of this ground- breaking composition on the horizon, details of performances and shows will be announced soon, offering audiences a chance to experience this unique fusion of music and mysticism live.
