Existing in an alternate version of the nineties where Suede exorcised the whining posturing of brett Anderson from their ranks and spent their lives jamming on spaceman 3 and Spiritualized covers instead, this Nottingham ‘supergroup’ (for it features members of the late, lamented six by seven, Echoboy, Model Morning and Bent) are a refereshing trip back to when the NME supported real bands as opposed to whatever hair-stylist endorsed, pop-punk playing mess they over-hype now. ‘All is real’, the lead-off track from this lovely two song single, is a warm, fuzzy, melodic song that shimmers like heat haze on an empty highway only to vanish when you get too close. It’s the sort of song that gently wraps itself around you when played at home but is liable to come fully alive in the live environment, not least because the drums, for all their low volume in the mix, are clattering away at hyperspeed beneath the beautifully harmonised vocals.
Meanwhile the flip side – ‘April’ (which you can see below in the video clip) is a soaring, guitar laden stroll with swooning backing vocals and a lazy melody that creeps inside your head whether you want it to or not while the reverb-drenched guitar is reminiscent of nothing more than the wonderful Seafood on ‘when do we start fighting?’
With live dates this month (listed underneath the video clip) it seems that spotlight kid are now concentrating on building their set and preparing themselves for a full length album which, if these two sublime songs are anything to go by, will be a glorious reminder of the hey-day of indie rock. A lovely introduction to a band who will hopefully develop into something truly special.
