Soundtracks can be a real mixed bag, often providing record labels with a dubiously motivated chance to show off the talented and not-so-talented elements of their roster. However, every once in a while a gem comes along – The Natural Born Killers or Lost Highway soundtracks spring to mind, or indeed the Forest Gump soundtrack. This CD pulls the same trick as the latter compilation, gathering together a stunning selection of period pieces that delve back to the roots of the glorious rock ‘n’ roll genre and present a snapshot of timeless rock at its best.
‘Nowhere boy’ the film deals with the life of a young John Lennon, finding his feet in the world of rock through the gritty music of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and the timeless Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (all of which are included on the first disc of this double set). The soundtrack has been lovingly compiled to represent those first steps and the tracks used are all perfect examples of a genre that has refused to die. Reviewing such well known tracks is somewhat superfluous, suffice it to say that both discs cram in a choice selection that will delight fans or serve as the perfect introduction. What is worth reviewing are the tracks recorded specifically for the film under the guise of The Nowhere Boys.
Playing tracks that will be instantly familiar (‘Maggie May’, ‘That’ll be the day’ to name but two) The Nowhere Boys have been recorded perfectly to simulate the feel of the era and it is a remarkable testament to the skill of those involved that not a single one of the songs placed into this melee of classic tunes sounds contrived or out of place. With vocals sounding clear and eerily like the young Lennon, and the tracks thoughtfully chosen (the nowhere boys actually represent the Quarrymen – Lennon’s first band) it is clear that those involved have a good grasp of the music involved and a passion for accuracy that does them no end of credit. Couple this with nicely written liner notes that show a genuine passion for the subject matter and you have a great package of tracks that will prove worthy in any rock fan’s collection. A great compilation.
