It could only happen with grindcore. At a time when the rest of the world is looking to categorise and risk assess everything, this new, ultra-short EP from the legendary Total Fucking Destruction comes proudly bearing the inscription “Press play and destroy the world!” Not perhaps the most inviting of messages, but on that is apt enough.
As a band Total Fucking Destruction are deranged geniuses. Essentially taking elements of Devin Townsend, Napalm Death, Fantomas and Dillinger Escape plan, and cramming the disparate whole into a chassis designed to hold half as much information (the philosophical equivalent of trying to squeeze eight sumo wrestlers into a Mini) , TFD are so relentlessly drilled that despite the speed and brutality of their approach it still sounds innately musical – a near-miracle of musical proportions – whilst simultaneously clearing your sinuses as effectively as a chilli-pepper tipped drill to the cranium.
Of the two tracks on offer (and this is available as a free download so you have no excuses not to grab a copy), the first is the sub-two-minute ‘monsters’, a masterpiece of understated rage that bursts from the speakers like pus from a freshly squeezed and gigantic zit. It’s cathartic, vile and rather like the music a horror movie obsessed speed addict might hear in their head whilst on a come down. In contrast the choral-tinged (no seriously) ‘is your love a rainbow’ is the freshly released discharge dribbling down the mirror. Imagine Therion blended with the aforementioned napalm death and cut with low-grade amphetamine – that’s the sound you can expect here and whilst logic dictates that such a sound should be as appealing as a Coca-Cola enema, it is surprisingly effective and devastatingly awesome. It goes without saying (but we’re nothing if not thorough so we’ll say it anyway) that Rodney (Dead Milkmen) does a sterling job on vocals too.
So… what more do you need to know? Grindcore is more awesome than you. Well, if not the genre then certainly Total Fucking Destruction are more awesome than you. Solve this problem by getting this EP and clasping it to your bosom until parts of your anatomy rupture – it’s a force ten assault that will leave you broken, battered and more in love than an abused hostage with Helsinki syndrome.
