In the late 70′, early 80’s heavy rock re-emerged with a vengeance. Lots of good bands releasing really good, heavy albums, playing Reading even Top Of The Pops. They never made TOTP, but Y And T were a really good, sometimes great band of that era. ‘Black Tiger’, ‘Meanstreak’ and ‘Earthshaker’ made a real impression on rock fans on both sides of the Atlantic, while lead singer and guitarist Dave Meniketti, for me, is one of the most talented guys in his field. He and Phil Kennemore, the other long term Yand T member, are back with able assistance from guitarist John Nymann and the lively drummer Mike Vanderhule with Facemelter. A very misleading title and cover, but, is a nod to their history.
Admittedly the cd sounds quite dated but who cares? It has loads of great singing and guitar playing from Meniketti. It’s not a patch on the excellent ‘Endangered Species’ cd but it certainly has it’s moments. After a really cheesey intro. ‘On With The Show’ has some really nice bass lines, energetic drumming and a catchy, chuggy riff with the signature Meniketti melodic and emotive singing and great solos.’How Long’ is basic heartbreak stuff with nice melodic guitar. ‘Shine On’ has nice tempo changes and some great guitar work. ‘I Want Your Money’ is slagging off the greedy capitalists during this time of recession, but has too many hints of jealousy to work for me. ‘Wild Child’ is simple rock fare but is saved by some great guitar solos. ‘I’m Coming Home’ is reminiscent of 80’s Y and T and ‘If You Want Me’ is classic blues with, yes you guessed it great guitar work. ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ is another classy blues track with a nice acoustic start, good quality singing and solos again.
I can’t see this cd winning many new fans, but, for the old fans of the band this is a welcome return after a very long time. Not their best, but there are some very good Meniketti moments, which will do for me and hopefully some others.
