Some of you may have caught the stunning new album from Arabrot lately. You may have caught our review (if not, head here to check it out) or even, if you were digging deep, found our interview with Arabrot frontman Kjetil Nernes (you missed that too? Dammit! It’s here.) Whatever, if you’re here, it’s because you know Arabrot are on tour in the UK. What you may not know, however, is that a near perfect marriage between art, media and music is taking in place in Stoke-On-Trent. A collaboration between band and Hush Hush Cinema (see below), this is no ordinary gig, and we can think of no better way to witness the band’s unique sounds than this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Hush Hush Cinema 10 x Årabrot

To celebrate Hush Hush Cinemas 10th Anniversary we’re teaming up with award winning Norwegian rock pioneers Årabrot to bring you an evening of immersive performance and cinematic brilliance in which the band will play an integral part. With their confrontational brand of sleazy punk rock and cerebral experimentalism we’re inviting audiences to our secret location to experience a one night only spectacular, a feast for all the senses in which investigate the theme of ‘the against ones self’ through theatre, film and a live performance from Årabrot to promote their upcoming album ‘The Gospel’.
Hush Hush Cinema is an independent film collective who create extra-ordinary experiences in secret locations around Stoke and North Staffordshire. Previous films have included 1970s British drama Colossus: The Forbin Project shown in a secret nuclear bunker, cult comedy ‘What Ever Happened to Harold Smith’ in an abandoned Conversatives club and the legendary Spinal Tap performed in award winning venue The Sugarmilll in the heart of Stoke-on-Trent. The Gospel marks the start of the new era in Årabrot’s evolution
that the recent EP’s I Modi and You Bunch of Idiots has hinted at. This is Årabrot at its most confronting and unsettling yet still their most accessible work so far. This new album though could just as well never have happened. Just before going on a three week UK tour Årabrot main man Kjetil Nernes discovered an unsettling itch in his throat. After a quick visit to the doctor Nernes completed the tour with an alarming secret: Malignant cancer.
The album you have in front of you is a collection of the music and lyrics written while undergoing surgery, treatment and recovery. In Nernes’ own words:
“The theme of the Gospel is a vision of the lonely warrior on a summit looking out over a battle field, the smoke from the bomb craters, an all-encompassing silence. The war was against one self; against the ugliness, against the sickness. You sink to the bottom of the sea. All of a sudden you are back on the surface again, stupefied. And hungry! A wicked hunger for everything human life has to offer: Sex! War! Drugs! You breathe, but not like before. “The man who has been in hell never forget””
