Formed in 2015, Dead Space Chamber Music appeared for their first set of public performances in the ruins of Temple Church, Bristol, at various times of the day and night, as part of a whole month of 24-hour performances. The setting and atmosphere proved fortuitous, given that founding members Ellen Southern (vocals, psaltery, found-sound) and Tom Bush’s (guitar, sampler) shared interests in early music and gothic aesthetics have served to inspire them in the creation of their otherworldly music.

Eight years later, and with the addition of Liz Muir (cello) and Katie Murt (drums and percussion), Dead Space Chamber Music have honed their powerful and distinctive sound. They reinterpret historical material, particularly from the medieval and Renaissance periods, taking forms and melodies that are hundreds of years old and shapeshifting them into highly emotive and atmospheric contemporary works. Drawing on many musical approaches, including ‘found sound’ and improvisation, they incorporate elements of dark medieval, industrial, ritual, and doom.

The band has earned enthusiastic reviews for their shows, having previously supported The Danse Society, Cold in Berlin, Rose McDowell, Some Became Hollow Tubes (members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor & This Quiet Army), and Bonnacons of Doom. In November 2022 they accompanied hackedepicciotto (Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten and Danielle de Picciotto of Crime & The City Solution) on the UK dates of their European tour.

They co-curate the Dark Alchemy event series in Bristol with modular-synth artist Tommy Creep, creating immersive events in unusual spaces such as churches, crypts and historic vaulted tunnels. Between live events and livestreams, they have hosted and collaborated with artists including Kate Arnold, The Nent (DE), Il Santo Bevitore, A-Sun Amissa and Maud the Moth.

The Black Hours, the band’s latest studio album, received very positive reviews and brought Dead Space Chamber Music to the attention of wider audiences in and beyond the UK. Two years in the making, it was released in late 2021. The title refers to an intimate medieval prayer book — a devotional ‘book of hours’ — of the same name. Ranging from melodic and tender to doom-laden and visceral, it digs deep into the unsettling and disorienting experiences of the time it was created.
